Breeding Program team member to join Seeing Eye Dogs' breeding department

Permanent part time role

Days, hours and flexible working arrangements negotiable with successful candidate

The Breeding Program Associate will join SED's growing breeding department to support the recruitment and development of breeder carers, management of breeding stock behaviour and health, and ongoing expansion of the program itself. The Breeding Program Associate role will contribute heavily to the production and development of Seeing Eye Dog pups that will go on to become dog guides for clients with blindness or low vision.

This role will suit a candidate who can adapt their working hours and sometimes days (including occasional weekend work) to meet changing priorities within the breeding program. The successful candidate will be willing to undertake road travel throughout wider Melbourne and some rural areas to visit breeder carers, breeders and veterinary clinics.

Ability to train and mentor volunteers, as well as provide leadership, supervision and successfully conduct critical conversations with carers is an essential component of the role, so advanced interpersonal communication skills are a must.

The Breeding Program works closely with all other departments of Seeing Eye Dogs (Kennels, Puppy Centre, Puppy Development and Client Services), so proven ability to successfully work collaboratively in a team environment is required.

Additional responsibilities will include involvement in selection of stock for the breeding program, temperament testing program, and genetic disease management, reproductive health of breeding stock and co-ordinating matings.

Applicants will need to demonstrate knowledge of dog training methodology, dog temperament and behaviour, and provide evidence of an advanced level of operating skills; planning, time management, motivation, initiative, independent decision making, problem solving and all forms of communication.
